Bathroom renovations can be challenging

The bathroom is the most common room in the home to renovate. With evolving trends and new products and technology on the market, it can be challenging to decide which products to choose or splurge on for your bathroom.

Hiring a qualified bathroom designer should be the first step before tackling your project. Not a decorator, not a plumber — a designer. They will be able to give you a proper plan to maximize space, storage and efficiency.

BATHROOM DILEMMAS

A separate tub and shower: This is on the wish list of every homeowner, but it is difficult to achieve unless you have a large space. If you are dealing with a small- to medium-size bathroom, think about a tub/shower combo. You can dress it up with tile walls and recessed niches, by adding a recessed down light to make it appear bright and open, and by using a glass door or shield.

His and hers sinks: At the top of the wish list is a his and hers sink. These are absolutely necessary if you share the bathroom and are getting ready for your day at the same time as someone else. However, if this is not the case, having only one sink will add countertop space to your bathroom and may even look less busy.

Shower activities: It is important to think about what you’ll be doing in your shower when you’re in the design phase. If you plan to shave your legs in the shower, incorporate a bench seat, corner seat or recessed toe niche to make this activity easier.

Keeping glass clean: Glass shower doors are the enemy of clean freaks. Soap scum builds up along the tracks and it seems like an impossible task to keep them clean. This is a problem with new sleek shower doors with thin tracks. Try a shower or tub glass shield instead. These do not have a track along the bottom and move in and out for you to be able to turn on the water and get in.

Storage: Many homeowners complain of lack of storage in the bathroom. Try incorporating recessed, or wall-mounted medicine cabinets to hold items such as deodorant and toothpaste. There are many sleek mirrored medicine cabinets on the market today that will not date the style of your space.
